World Languages

Overview

The World Language Department offers programs in three modern languages (French, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish) and one classical language (Latin). Modern language instruction focuses on developing both communicative and cultural competency. Latin instruction includes the study of language structure and the analysis of literary texts.

Course Requirements

For graduation, students must complete three consecutive years of study in one of these languages.
Seniors may continue with a fourth year of study in the same language.
Juniors and seniors can also choose to take a yearlong elective in Italian language and culture.
An honors program is available starting at the second level for students who demonstrate both proven ability and a willingness to engage in a more rigorous course of study. Teacher recommendation is required for this program.
Advanced Placement courses are available in French, Latin, and Spanish

* Beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, we will remove the AP designation from our courses. Some courses will still resemble AP courses, with teachers able to use their professional discretion to adapt and improve their curricula. Some courses will be entirely new. All courses taught at the advanced level will have a clear designation that will be communicated to students, families, and colleges.
