Sophomore English Students Reimagine Poetry Through Window Art Installations

The halls of Burnham House became a vibrant canvas this spring as sophomore English students embarked on a unique artistic project. Tasked with exploring the deep-seated relationship between poetry and visual art, students created window installations inspired by a diverse selection of poems.

This project challenged students to move beyond the literal interpretation of language and delve into the emotional core and thematic concerns of their assigned poems. Following a close reading of their chosen work, utilizing the poetic tools learned in class, students collaborated in small groups to design window displays that visually represent the essence of the poem. The groups also submitted an annotated version of their poem, showcasing their individual analytical engagement. They also created a placard which explained their work for passersby to read, placed next to their window exhibit.

The inspiration for this project came from an initiative in Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, where store windows were transformed into artistic interpretations of his renowned sonnets. This project made headlines, for example in BBC News, and served as a compelling example of how literary works can inspire engaging visual narratives within public spaces.

The MB window installations (see gallery) offered a fresh perspective on familiar and perhaps new poetic works, and invited the school community to engage with literature through a visual lens.
