Head Coach
Matty Bennett is the head boys and girls cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track coach at Moses Brown. He is a native of Columbia, Missouri, and he found his passion for running through playing competitive soccer growing up. He graduated from Rock Bridge High School where he was the school record holder in the mile and a multiple time all-state runner in cross country and track. In college, he competed for Syracuse University's cross country, indoor, and outdoor track teams, and he was a 4-time Big East Scholar Athlete. After graduating from Syracuse with degrees in English and psychology, he went to Virginia Tech to pursue his master's degree in creative writing. While at Virginia Tech, he was a graduate assistant coach for the cross country and track teams for 3 years, working with numerous ACC champions and All-Americans, and the team won 4 ACC track championships during his time there. He then went on to coach cross country and track at the University of Montana, where he coached distance, and had 1 athlete qualify for outdoor nationals in the 3,000m steeplechase.
In 2017, he came to Rhode Island through a program called Teach For America where he taught English in the Providence Public Schools. In 2018, he became the head indoor and outdoor track coach at Moses Brown.
At Moses Brown, in the last 5 years, he has led his teams to 7 Class C Championship victories (Girls XC ‘21, Girls Indoor Track ‘22, ‘23, and Girls Outdoor Track ‘19, ‘21, ‘22, ‘23). He’s also led his programs to the highest team finishes in school history at the cross country state meet (girls 3rd place '22), girls indoor track state meet (2nd place '21, ‘23), and outdoor track state meets (girls 5th place, boys 6th place).
Matty joined the Moses Brown upper school faculty as an English teacher in 2021. He is the author of two books of poetry, loves leaf peeping in the fall, is an avid piano player, and he enjoys playing Super Smash Bros. Matty lives with his husband Matteo in Providence. -
