Moses Brown’s upper school Model UN group took part at Brown University’s Simulation of the United Nations (BUSUN) November 10-12, 2023, which included hundreds of students from across the country. The theme was “Redefining Justice.”

Humanities teacher and Model UN faculty advisor Jennifer Stewart shared that this group is the first MB Model UN to participate in this event at Brown, with three students earning awards for their work.

Sophomore Constance S. won Outstanding Delegate for her work in the National Resident Matching Program Specialized Committee. 

Senior Novia J. won a Verbal Commendation for her work in the China – Taiwan Crisis Committee. She also received the Erinn Phelan Award given in honor of Erinn Phelan, a former BUSUN Secretary-General, which recognizes the delegate who demonstrates the greatest commitment to the empowerment of women. Additionally, it is intended to highlight the delegate who best embodies visionary leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to service.

As the recipient, Novia will receive $500 to donate to the charitable organization of her choice. Novia selected House of Hope here in Rhode Island. BUSUN will also make an additional donation to the traumatic brain injury unit at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in honor of Erinn.

Though sophomore Josselyn W. was unable to participate in the simulation, she was selected through a competitive process by BUSUN Secretaries General to be one of ten students to attend a Brown University course entitled Politics of the Illicit Global Economy.

“Given the caliber of the delegations in attendance, I could not be more proud of the entire MB delegation,” remarked Jennifer about their participation and accomplishments. MB’s Model UN includes the following students: Anna C., Novia J., Sai K., Leiton K., Mike M., Nathan M., Ella N,, Gwen P., Mason W., and Constance S.
