Honors Physics Movement Lab Had Students Dancing for Science

An Honors Physics Movement Lab provided students with a collaborative, hands-on opportunity to apply Newton's Laws of Motion and explore the center of mass of two-body systems.

Through activities inspired by contact improvisation dance practices and guided research, the lab reinforced students' ability to identify and evaluate action and reaction force pairs in diverse situations. Key exercises that demonstrated these principles included:

  • Counterbalance: To directly illustrate the required force pair of the Third Law.
  • Shoulder-to-Shoulder: To explore the sharing and distribution of forces (weight).
  • Human Teeter-Totter: To solidify understanding of force vectors and their multiple components.
