Eighth Graders Use Theatrical Combat Techniques to Master Shakespearean Character and Conflict

Our 8th graders aren't just reading Romeo and Juliet; they're getting into the thick of the action! In preparation for their integrated "Dramglish" unit (theatre and English collab), they dove into the fundamentals of stage sword fighting (slowly and safely, of course) under the guidance of teacher Steve Kidd.

This wasn't just about cool choreography—it was a deep dive into physical storytelling. Students learned how a character's motivation and relationships inform every move. The entire activity was largely silent, focused entirely on real-time cueing, listening, and collaboration. Every student practiced trust, timing, and control.

This hands-on activity helped to develop the groundwork for understanding the conflict, rhythm, and emotional stakes at the heart of the play. Get ready for some action-packed and deeply felt Shakespeare!
