MOSES is structured as a peer ministry. With the exception of the directors and a number of other adult coaches, trips are run by student leaders. These Student Leaders, who serve as either Team Shepherds or Team Directors, are really the ministers of MOSES, seeking to teach, encourage, mentor, and meet spiritual and emotional needs of the other participants. The other participants are those who sign up to come on our trips for personal interest and growth, often because a friend, parent or youth leader encouraged them.
Toronto Report 2011:
A small, but eager group left on Wednesday, November 23 for Toronto. Our housing was, once again, provided by the Grace Christian Reformed Church in Scarborough – a nearby suburb of Toronto. Arrival was early – around 8:30 and Pastor Ray from All Nations Christian Fellowship welcomed the team.
The next three days, the team served at Lighthouse Ministries with some painting. On both Thursday and Friday afternoons, we worked with an after school program hosted by the Toronto City Mission. We played games with children ages 1st through 6th grades and helped a few with homework.
The evening street walk through the homeless sector was a high-light for everyone. This year, our guide was Simon, a former homeless person. Speaking from experience, he is able to explain how drugs and alcohol can lead a person to a life of crime, imprisonment and, eventually homelessness. Simon also stressed that, with his record, it is now very difficult for him to find employment. Good lessons for today’s young people!
We also served at the Grace Church, by washing windows and cleaning heating vents. We are always willing to serve the places that offer us free hospitality.
Friday evening we went to an ice rink with Pauline Ho and her family. Pauline hosted the team at her home after the skating, for a time of fun and fellowship.
Saturday is the day for Kid’s Church, but, since the regular facility was not available; we took the kids to a local park and played with them there.
Saturday night is always the multi-ethnic dinner for the All Nations congregation and it did not disappoint. Rick shared with the group about the MOSES ministry and Mary gave her testimony.
After worship at All Nations, the ladies from the church packed sack lunches for the team and we headed for home, arriving back at Commerce around 7:10 PM.
We thank the Lord for fantastic driving conditions and perfect border crossings, both ways. Praise be to God!
